SYRACUSE, NY – Students attending Onondaga Community College in the spring of 2022 will have the choice of two new programs.

The New York State Department of Education has just approved the AS Science Laboratory Studies and Automotive Technology Certificate programs.

The degree in Laboratory Science will give students the opportunity to be at the forefront of laboratory technology and processing. Students will learn how to safely collect, analyze and interpret laboratory data and results. This curriculum will transfer seamlessly to SUNY Upstate Medical University and other four-year institutions. Career options include a laboratory technician or assistant, medical technologist, or clinical laboratory scientist.

The Automotive Technology Certificate gives students the option of entering the workforce directly after one year or continuing into the two-year associate’s degree program. Students will learn to work with computer-controlled fuel and ignition systems, anti-lock brakes, microcomputer-controlled systems and to diagnose problems using the most advanced electronic tools.

“These two new programs offer our students exciting options in industries where workers are in demand. Auto Repair Shops in downtown New York are in constant contact with us as they search for the next generation of technicians. For those interested in laboratory science, we’ve all seen throughout Covid how SUNY Upstate Medical University has been at the center of the invention. This new program will give students the skills they need to join in with medical science, medical research, new medicine development, vaccinations, and all the groundbreaking work being done right here in our region. Said OCC President Dr. Casey Crabill.

The addition of these new programs reinforces OCC’s commitment to providing students with learning options that offer direct pathways to a four-year college or directly into the workforce. In August, the College added just-in-time programs for the 2021 fall semester, including a Cyber Security Diploma, Paramedic Certificate, Paramedic Diploma, Direct Support Professional Certificate, and Special Initiative. in partnership with the Syracuse City School District (SCSD) to provide SCSD teaching assistants with the opportunity to pursue an associate’s degree in the humanities and social sciences without visiting the OCC campus.
